General information on lung cancer surgery

Lung cancer in early stage (stage I and II) is usually treated by the intervention of surgery and a combination of chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Phase II cancer treated with surgery in May, in some cases, the cancer, but in general, downstream, is treated with chemotherapy alone or in combination with chemotherapy and radiation – it is possible that tumors that decreased in size and therefore a re-staging the patient is warranted and surgery becomes a viable option.

The process of removing the tumor, cancer is known as "the resection or removal of the mass of cancer and suspected diseased tissue. A variety of surgical options available, but traditional techniques are:

Thoracotomy – an incision through the chest wall and

Median sternotomy in which the surgeon through the sternum to open the cavity chest and lungs.

Since these two techniques involve long periods of recovery and pain for the patient, the alternatives are designed to provide access to tumors of lung cancer and with less discomfort to the patient;

Limited anterior thoracotomy – known as "Alt" carried in the front of the chest, and requires a much smaller incision to thoracotomy or median sternotomy;

Anterioraxilary thoracotomy – Called "AAT" involves an incision in the front end of the chest under the arm,

Posterolateral thoracotomy – called "PLT" involves an incision in the back or left chest of the patient.

ALT, in particular, offers a less invasive than standard thoracotomy, and undoubtedly the result of reduced blood loss for patients with a period much less pain and recovery.

Thoracoscopic or surgical Video-assisted thoracic (VT)

VATS is a state of advanced surgical technique that allows the resection of tumors without invasive surgery complete. A video camera allows the surgeon to see inside the patient's chest and location of cancerous tumors with a screen full-power television. This provides a qualified surgeon with the ability to operate without having to open the patient and consists of a series of small incisions.

As surgical incisions and invasion is considerably reduced, the patient feels less pain and has a very limited period of recovery after the operation. The technique is not universally used mainly for two reasons – first, the surgical skill level required is very high and highly skilled surgeons can use the technique successfully. Furthermore, as the surgeon has a complete picture of the area is affected tissue, it can miss tumors or evidence of diseased tissues with an operation standard found in May.

VATS is usually best for the early stages of lung cancer, where there is no evidence that the disease has Metastasis to other parts of the body or the lungs themselves.

The use of alternative therapies

Depending on the nature of disease and health The patient's general, it is common for patients treated before and after surgery with chemotherapy and radiotherapy. In some cases, where surgery Not recommended, a patient can undergo alternative therapies in combination or separate treatment, but the exact treatment regimen is recommended for a patient depends circumstances and the team's findings provide oncology treatment.
